Meetup 2022 12 02
2022 is coming to an end, thinking back on the year we are grateful for the people who have joined along the year, the skills we’ve learned, and the inspiration we’ve gotten from each other. Reflecting on the gains of joining an online study session, we realized that having a community where you can share your progress one step at a time, no matter your background fuels motivation and accountability. We’ve seen our member’s progress over time and our progress leading these sessions.
The focus is not on only the time study we have during each session, but on the journey we share, constantly meeting, communicating in the #xr-developers slack channel, and making friends along the way.
In 2023 we are looking forward to continuing to grow together, welcoming people new to XR, and professionals that want to share their knowledge in XR or Game development and help us with the mission of empowering diverse women to excel in technology careers!
On the last meeting of the year, we kicked off with ✨holiday filters, 🎅 Santa hats, 🎄🦌 Christmas headbands, and motivated participants.
Aya joined us for the first time with her cute daughter. Aya has a computer science background and worked with different programming languages. She is now interested in learning about XR and experimenting with educational applications and games for her daughter.
Jermaine has experience with CGI and working on VR applications at the moment.
Maria, Noella, and Patricia worked on AR demo projects using Unity and Vuforia.
In this section, we share demos and work-in-progress projects from our participants.
Noella has joined us on several sessions and is constantly progressing in her Unity Jr. Programmer pathway course, C# and Unity skills, and working on projects. She has been studying to use Vuforia and creating an image target database for her application. In her AR demo, she shows a cool UFO levitating on top of the marker and adding rotation via script.

Let’s look at her project in the Game view! 🎬

Cool isn't it? ✨ There is more to come because she plans to continue working on adding light effects!
Maria and Patricia have been working on an Open source project called AR Postcard. This is a work-in-progress project where they plan to experiment with creating interactive AR experiences for friends and share their journey of learning about AR development.
Maria has been creating beautiful assets for the project including a gift box 🎁 and open-lid animation, which we will use as a base to show the AR experience for the PostCard. She has been learning how to integrate voice commands to make a more intuitive interaction with the AR experience.
For her demo, she used the keywordRecognizer voice input interaction from UnityEngine.Windows.Speech to listen to the “open” keyword that will start the gift-opening animation.
Let’s see the AR scene in the Game view! 🎬
Using Debug.log(), she can track the events sequence in the Console window.
✨Exciting demo! We appreciate Maria for sharing about the Voice input library and the code will be shared soon in the AR PostCard project!
Patricia has been working on the documentation of the AR Postcard project and setting up a demo scene in the project. She imported the gift box that Maria designed and created a marker database. During this session, she was working on a Wiki tutorial explaining how to set up the project and resources. She also showed the demo PostCard scene, sharing a brief overview of the Vuforia Database, Markers ratings, importing assets, choosing makers, and tracking options.
The following screen shows the database settings and the Image Target selected (you can have more than one marker in a database).

Let’s see in the PostCard scene in the Game view! 🎬

You can check the AR settings guide here.
We will continue working on this project adding animations, original 3D assets, and different user interactions.
We are thankful for this community and the opportunity to meet other great women and men allies who are interested in XR and supporting our mission.
Check out our events at Women Who Code Tokyo. ✨ Keep on Learning! 🚀
