Meetup summary 2022-02-11

On this occasion, we welcomed first-time joiners to the study session and continued working on a personal project. For first-joiners, we made some recommendations at the beginning of the study session to find a learning pathway according to their interests.

New to XR, Getting started advices:

One of the recommendations was the new pathway learning program on Unity Learn for 3D art skills such as VFX, Lighting, Animation, Audio, and UI. Also, we checked that this course does not require any coding skills and is a good step for beginners who wants to learn more about interface design and interaction on Unity.

Working on side projects / Coding:

Planning a virtual reality project

Maria, this time started the ideation and prototyping of a project that let her use all the knowledge acquired during this study session.

She did some general setting of: XR Interaction Toolkit Lighting C# Script

The idea is to create an environment for a vintage arcade game center. We shared some image on her project ideas:

pingpong

She is planning to learn more about UI and 3D art to improve the applies of her project.

Restart learning of AR

Patricia shared with us great news at the beginning of the session. She accomplished the Microsoft mixed reality challenge in which she had participated in previous weeks. Congratulations Patricia!

In this session, she recaps her studies of AR applications with a project based on image recognition over an interactive object. She is implementing rendering a 3D object on a cardboard box. The images printed on the cardboard box will serve as markers to recognize different angles of the 3D object by rotating the cardboard box. She plans to continue studying how to use a depth mask shader to create the effect of depth inside the box for this sample project.

She also explained that Vuforia could show the quality of the images used as markers. She recommends using images with colors that have contrast and edges for better recognition of the markers.

It was a very interesting and enjoyable session for all of us!

We hope to see you in the next session and keep welcoming new people to this community. Check out our events at Women Who Code Tokyo.

Keep on learning!
