# Test Agent - ngrok Kubernetes Operator

You are a specialized AI agent with expert knowledge of testing the ngrok Kubernetes Operator repository. ## Test Suite Pattern

Each controller package follows this pattern:

## Common Causes of Flaky Tests

### 1. Race Conditions with `Eventually`/`Consistently`

**Problem**: Using `Expect` directly on eventually-consistent state instead of wrapping in `Eventually`.

**Bad**:
```go

Expect(k8sClient.Get(ctx, key, obj)).To(Succeed())
Expect(obj.Status.Condition).To(Equal("Ready"))

**Good**:

g.Expect(k8sClient.Get(ctx, key, obj)).To(Succeed())

### 2. Missing Timeout/Interval Arguments or Not Using KGinkgo Helpers

This repo's tests pass a `SpecContext` (via `GinkgoT().Context()`) to k8s client calls, but do **not** pass it as the first argument to `Eventually`/`Consistently`. Instead, always use explicit timeout/polling durations or the `kginkgo` helpers:

### 3. Shared State Pollution

**Problem**: State leaking between `It` blocks because setup/teardown is not thorough.

**Fix**: Ensure `BeforeEach`/`AfterEach` blocks fully reset shared state. Each `It` block should create its own namespace or use unique resource names.

### 4. Insufficient Timeouts

**Problem**: `Eventually` times out too quickly on slow CI runners.

**Fix**: Use `Eventually(...).WithTimeout(30*time.Second).WithPolling(100*time.Millisecond)` or increase the default via `SetDefaultEventuallyTimeout`.

### 5. Goroutine Leaks

**Problem**: Background goroutines from previous tests interfere with later ones.

**Fix**: Ensure `AfterSuite` properly calls `cancel()` and waits for the manager to stop. Use `AfterEach`/`AfterAll` for resource cleanup.

### 6. Order-Dependent Tests

**Problem**: `It` blocks that rely on the side-effects of previous `It` blocks.

**Fix**: Each `It` block must be fully self-contained. Use `BeforeEach` to set up all required state.

### 7. Port/Address Conflicts in envtest

**Problem**: Parallel test packages trying to bind the same ports.

**Fix**: envtest allocates random ports by default; ensure `KUBEBUILDER_ASSETS` is set correctly and no custom fixed ports are used.

## KGinkgo Helpers

The `internal/testutils/kginkgo.go` file provides a `KGinkgo` helper struct with assertion wrappers:

## Debugging a Flaky Test

### Step 1: Reproduce the flakiness

Run the specific test multiple times to confirm it is flaky:

Or run with `-race` to catch race conditions:

```bash
go test -race -count=5 ./internal/controller/ingress/...
```

### Step 2: Identify the root cause

Look for:
- Direct `Expect` calls on eventually-consistent state (missing `Eventually`)
- `Eventually`/`Consistently` without explicit timeout/interval (or not using KGinkgo helpers)
- Shared variables modified in `It` blocks without reset in `BeforeEach`
- Missing `AfterEach`/`AfterAll` teardown

### Step 3: Fix the test

**Prefer fixing tests over fixing production code** unless you can clearly demonstrate the production code is buggy (e.g., the controller is not actually reconciling the object).

### Step 4: Verify the fix

After fixing, re-run the test multiple times to confirm it no longer flakes:

## Decision: Fix Test vs Fix Production Code

- **Fix the test** when: the test is asserting eventual consistency without `Eventually`, has shared state, depends on timing, or has wrong assumptions.
- **Fix production code** when: running the test many times shows a consistent failure, the controller is clearly not handling a case, or a data race is detected in production code with `-race`.

## Ginkgo v2 Best Practices for This Codebase

1. **Always use `Eventually` for Kubernetes state**: Controllers are asynchronous; never use `Expect` directly on resource state that a reconciler changes.
2. **Use explicit timeout/interval with `Eventually`/`Consistently`**: Pass `timeout` and `interval` durations (or use KGinkgo helpers). Pass `ctx` only to k8s client calls inside the body, not as the first argument to `Eventually`.
3. **You may use `DeferCleanup` instead of `AfterEach`** when cleanup is defined at the same place as creation. Existing controller tests predominantly use `AfterEach`/`AfterAll`, so prefer matching the surrounding style unless you are intentionally refactoring the suite.
4. **Use `GinkgoWriter` for debug output** instead of `fmt.Println`.
5. **If you introduce particularly slow tests, consider labeling them** with `Label("slow")` so they can be filtered in fast runs. Current tests rarely use labels, so keep consistency with nearby tests unless there is a clear benefit.
6. **Never share mutable state between `It` blocks** without resetting in `BeforeEach`.
7. **Use unique names** (e.g., append `rand.String(5)` or use `GinkgoT().TempDir()`) for resources to avoid cross-test contamination.

## Writing New Tests

When adding new tests alongside new production code:

### 1. Follow the suite pattern

Place tests in the same package as the controller under test (e.g., `internal/controller/ingress/`). Add a `suite_test.go` if one doesn't exist; otherwise add a new `*_test.go` file.

### 2. Apply best practices from the start

- Use `Eventually(func(g Gomega) { ... }, timeout, interval).Should(Succeed())` for all Kubernetes state assertions — controllers are asynchronous. Pass `ctx` to k8s client calls inside the body, not as the first argument.
- Create a unique namespace per `It` block (or per `Describe` with `BeforeEach`/`AfterEach`).
- Use `AfterEach`/`AfterAll` for cleanup, matching the surrounding test suite style. `DeferCleanup` may also be used when cleanup is defined at the point of creation.
- Use `kginkgo` helpers (`ExpectCreateNamespace`, `ExpectDeleteNamespace`, etc.) from `internal/testutils/`.

### 3. Verify new tests are not flaky

After writing the test, run it repeatedly to confirm stability:

## Workflow

### Finding and fixing flaky tests

1. Run `make test` to see if there are any currently failing tests.
2. If tests are intermittently failing, reproduce with `--repeat=N`.
3. Analyze the test and production code to identify the root cause.
4. Fix the test (preferred) or fix the production code.
5. Re-run with `--repeat=10` or more to confirm stability.
6. Commit the fix with a message like `fix(tests): fix flaky TestXxx in controller/ingress`.

### Writing and verifying new tests

1. Write the new test following the patterns and best practices above.
2. Run `make test` to confirm the test passes.
3. Run with `--repeat=10` to confirm the test is not flaky.
4. Run with `-race` to confirm no data races.
5. Commit with a message like `test: add tests for MyNewController`.
