SpikeRain is a tool that cleans rain from single photos. It uses a new method based on spiking neural networks. These networks work like simple models of the brain to improve images. SpikeRain was introduced at WACV 2026, a computer vision conference.
This program helps you get clearer photos even if they were taken in the rain. It works on pictures you have saved on your computer.
- Removes rain drops and streaks from your photos.
- Improves photo quality without changing the original style.
- Works fast and uses less power with spiking neural networks.
- Can restore old or damaged images with rain marks.
- Easy to use, no technical skills needed.
SpikeRain runs on Windows. Make sure your computer meets these guidelines:
- Windows 10 or later (64-bit recommended)
- At least 4 GB of RAM
- 2 GHz processor or faster
- 500 MB of free disk space
- Internet access to download the program
Start using SpikeRain with these steps. You do not need to install extra software or write code.

- The program will open a simple window.
Using SpikeRain is easy:
- Click the Open Image button.
- Browse your computer to find the photo you want to fix.
- Select the photo and click “Open.”
- SpikeRain loads the image into the program.
- Click Start Cleaning to remove rain effects.
- Wait a few seconds while the program works.
- The cleaned image will show beside your original.
You can zoom in to compare details and see the difference.
After the rain is removed:
- Click the Save Image button.
- Choose where to save it on your computer.
- Use a new file name if you don’t want to overwrite the original.
- Click “Save.”
SpikeRain has simple options to improve your experience:
- Strength level: Control how much rain is removed.
- Output format: Choose to save as JPG, PNG, or BMP.
- Preview mode: Toggle faster preview or full quality.
These options are easy to find in the settings menu (gear icon).
- Use photos in good focus for clearer cleaning.
- Avoid extremely dark or blurry photos.
- Crop large photos to reduce processing time.
- If the result looks too soft, reduce the strength setting.
SpikeRain uses spiking neural networks. These networks mimic how brain neurons send signals. This method is efficient and helps remove rain drops without losing image details.
It handles different types of rain patterns, like streaks or drops, and cleans photos faster than older methods.
- If SpikeRain does not start, check if your Windows is updated.
- If the program closes unexpectedly, try restarting your computer.
- If images look odd after cleaning, adjust the strength level.
- For slow performance, close other programs and try smaller images.
You can find details about the method and research behind SpikeRain in academic papers and on the GitHub release page.
