Open-FOQA ✈️

Affordable, open-source Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) for General Aviation and Flight Schools

Overview

Open-FOQA is a two-part project:

  • Open-FOQA-Alpha (Software) — data logging, uploading, parsing, and event analysis pipeline.
  • Open-FOQA V1 (Hardware) — a low-cost, battery-powered flight data recorder built around the SparkFun OpenLog Artemis (OLA) and GPS/IMU sensors.

Our mission: enable flight schools, GA pilots, and operators to collect and analyze FOQA data at a fraction of the cost of commercial systems.

Features

  • ✈️ Logs GPS, attitude, and flight parameters at high rate
  • 📂 Exports data as CSV/JSON with standardized schema
  • 📡 Optional automated upload via Wi-Fi/Cellular
  • 📊 FOQA analysis scripts (bank exceedance, unstable approach, high sink rate, etc.)
  • 🛠️ Fully open-source hardware + software, community-driven

Repository Layout

  • Open-FOQA-Alpha/ — Software stack (logging, upload, parser, analysis)
  • Open-FOQA-V1/ — Hardware design (BOM, wiring, enclosure, firmware)
  • examples/ — Sample datasets and parsed outputs
