HiDPI Not Available for 3840x1600 M4 Macbook Air

Hi all,

I'm on an Macbook air M4 running 26.2, and have it connected to an LG Ultrawide 3840x1600 and I'm not able to get HiDPI to work with the native resolution. I've tried turning off and on the edit system config of this display model option, I have flexible scaling enabled, changed the refresh rates, but nothing seems to be working. I'm assuming this is an issue with how the M4 handles this display.

Yes, this is a limitation of the M4 air, it will cap HiDPI resolutions for this display at a max horizontal 3072px.

You can use virtual screen mirroring or streaming as a workaround, but it will have its baggages. :(

I would have sworn that up until this week, I could use HiDPI with my M4 Air at 3440x1440. Maybe I was using a virtual screen and not knowing it? If so, how do I set that up again?

Hmm. Maybe it was virtual screen. You can check the GPU limit for the resolution under Display Information…/Capabilities at the display's Settings tab. You can also create a virtual screen (choose an aspect ratio that matches your display) and simply mirror it to the real screen. But the M4 Air will allow 3440x1440 HiDPI with certain screens (it depends on the dynamic resource allocation).
