mgrs.forward returns invalid response

When sending lat/lng to mgrs.forward I'm getting an invalid responses, for example:

TﾘG5622131844

OR

5RńP0567423065

When calling mgrs.toPoint with the expected mgrs I am getting the right lat/lng.

Mac with M1 if that is relevant...
