It's an un-scaled value with respect to Gauss (the unit of the range). To scale it into uT see what the Adafruit library does.

x_gauss = (float)x / scale;
event->magnetic.x = x_gauss * 100;  // microTesla per gauss

The datasheet has:

Sensitivity:
Field Range = ±2G: 12000
Field Range = ±8G: 3000

Though these numbers seems imprecise.
