AppImage is a convenient, easy-to-use way to package applications and their dependencies together into a single executable that runs on any system with Linux Standard Base. It would be nice to provide a Mixxx AppImage.

Sébastien, would you be interested in comparing the various new (supposedly) distro-independent packaging formats for GNU/Linux and implementing support for one of them for 2.2?

AppImage is the best imho (agentless, does not require any extra software to run)

AppImage really does seem like the perfect format for an application like Mixxx.
I was wondering if there has been any progress / any consideration to offer Mixxx in AppImage format?

Doesn't seem to be any development on the issue as Mixxx doesn't exist on https://appimage.github.io/apps/ or elsewhere, other apps have unofficial app images but this one is still taking off in popularity.

There is an effort ongoing to create an Appimage for Mixxx based on VCPG

mixxxdj/vcpkg#190

Do you have experience with that? I think we can make use of some consultants.

Yeah ideally when it comes to things like AppImages they would come directly from the application developers.
3rd party ones are not as desired, at least not by me anyways.

That is great to hear, to me AppImages are a much better format over Flatpaks (I will mention more about this below).
Not sure if you were asking Spencerx or me about consultants, I unfortunately do not have any experience creating AppImages only using them.

I personally really like AppImages, especially valuable for testing purposes.
-Portable, standalone approach.
-They allow newer versions to instantly be available and tested.
-They allow everyone to be using/testing the same version so test results can be more accurate.
-Users can still have access to previous versions to be able to compare to newer releases, allowing users to maybe help narrow down when issues are noticed to occur.

Good thing is that I have been noticing a lot more Linux based applications offering them from developers, probably for these reasons mentioned above. I have even noticed many audio based applications starting to use them. I have been trying to get a couple other audio based applications to consider them as well.
Hopefully the tools will become easier and easier to generate them, I have not heard of VCPG.

Anyways, thanks again for the replies, good to hear that some progress is being made for this.
