I downloaded the dmg file and my MacOS Tahoe laptop says the package is damaged and cannot be run.
I checked the sha256 and it matches.

Any ideas?

If it's a wider issue then it may be something related to the recent switch to cmake.

Issue is related to the newfangled Apple Quarantine security, which seems to have become extra sensitive since MacOS 26.4. You can un-quarantine the file by running the following from a Terminal window:

xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/NotepadNext.app
