Describe the bug / error

Problem

The Upgrade Store App action is missing for our SPFx app in the tenant App Catalog, even though a newer Marketplace version is live.

Current state

• Tenant App Catalog entry shows Name = WA200010298
• Marketplace listing: https://marketplace.microsoft.com/en-us/product/WA200010298
• Installed tenant version: 1.1.8.0
• Live Marketplace version: 1.3.1.0 (updated April 7, 2026)
• I reproduced this myself, and a customer also confirmed they do not see Upgrade Store App
• The app is Enabled, Valid app package, Deployed, and Added to all sites

Is this expected, or is this a bug in App Catalog / Marketplace linkage for SPFx apps?

1. Open the SharePoint admin center:

2. Go to More features -> Apps and click Open
3. Select CAD Viewer

At that point, Upgrade Store App does not appear.

Impact

Customers cannot upgrade the app using the documented App Catalog flow. A possible workaround is to delete and reinstall the app, but that is awkward to communicate and support across customers.

This appears to be related to SharePoint Online App Catalog / Marketplace integration rather than an issue with the SPFx documentation itself, so it’s not something the sp-dev-docs repo can directly address.

From what you’ve described, the behavior is not expected—under normal conditions, the “Upgrade Store App” option should appear when a newer Marketplace version is available and the app is properly linked.

At this point, I’ll confirm this behavior with the engineering team to determine whether this is:

• a platform issue, or
• a known limitation with Marketplace updates for SPFx solutions.

In the meantime, a couple of workarounds you can use:

1. Manual upgrade via App Catalog (recommended)

   • Upload the updated .sppkg file (same solution ID)
   • SharePoint will upgrade the app across sites without requiring removal

2. Reinstall the app

   • Remove the existing app and install the latest version from Marketplace
   • (Less ideal for production environments)

3. Verify installation source

   • Ensure the app was originally installed from Marketplace and not uploaded manually, as that can affect upgrade detection

Engineering confirmed that:
This is a platform limitation rather than a bug in your SPFx solution.

Workaround -
Use Classic App Catalog experience

• Switch to the classic UI for App Catalog
• The “Upgrade Store App” option will be available there (as expected)

We are tracking ADO for this with engineering as a platform limitation/UX gap between classic vs modern App Catalog experiences for Marketplace apps. It has been routed to the appropriate engineering team for review.

The workaround to use classic app catalog does not work. See screenshot below:

The other workarounds such as "upload the new sppkg manually" or "delete-then-reinstall the app" should work. However, these are awkward for our customers. People are (understandably) reluctant to delete their existing installations and set it up again. Even more reluctant to upload a random SPPKG that I would send them by email.

Is there a separate ticket that I can follow to track progress with the Marketplace engineering team? It seems that there is no reasonable way for SharePoint customers to update SPFx Apps until this is resolved?
