A manifesto for science after the human bottleneck

Science is dying. Not from lack of funding — global R&D spending has never been higher. Not from lack of talent — there are more PhDs alive today than in all prior centuries combined. It is dying from a cause that no one inside the institution is willing to name.
Before the diagnosis, a distinction that the modern world has been trained to ignore. Science and technology are not the same thing. Science discovers: new laws, new mechanisms, new principles that did not exist in any human mind the day before. Technology applies: it takes what science has already found and builds things with it. Technology is downstream of science. Always. The lag between discovery and application can be decades — sometimes half a century. And this lag is the source of the great illusion of our time.
When Peter Thiel observed that "the word 'technology' usually means information technology," he identified the sleight of hand. Computing has delivered exponential gains for half a century. Smartphones, cloud infrastructure, large language models — the acceleration in bits has been real and spectacular. But bits are not atoms. The power grid that charges your phone, the roads you drive on, the drugs in your medicine cabinet — these are largely unchanged from decades ago. "You have bits making progress," Thiel noted. "Atoms are strangely very stuck." The acceleration of information technology has created a dangerous illusion: that technology in general is advancing rapidly. It is not.
The data is unambiguous. Park, Leahey, and Funk analyzed 45 million papers and 3.9 million patents across every scientific field and found that the average disruptiveness of scientific work declined by over 90% between 1945 and 2010 (Nature, 2023). Not a marginal decline. A collapse. Bloom, Jones, Van Reenen, and Webb asked the question directly — "Are Ideas Getting Harder to Find?" — and the answer was yes: the number of researchers required to achieve Moore's Law doubling has grown more than 18-fold since the early 1970s (American Economic Review, 2020). More researchers. More money. More publications. Less discovery.
Look at the fields that matter most. Thiel catalogued the wreckage in "The End of the Future" (2011): physics without a fundamental breakthrough since the Standard Model, energy promises perpetually deferred, cancer still unconquered. Fourteen years later, every item on his ledger has gotten worse, not better. Physics has not produced a new fundamental law since the Standard Model was completed in the mid-1970s. String theory — the field's great hope — has consumed fifty years and thousands of careers without generating a single experimentally testable prediction; Cumrun Vafa's "swampland" conjectures remain untested, and with a landscape of 10^500 vacua, the theory can accommodate any conceivable result. The Higgs boson, celebrated in 2012, confirmed a hypothesis from 1964. It was verification, not discovery. The muon g-2 anomaly — for years the most promising hint of physics beyond the Standard Model — collapsed in June 2025 when Fermilab's final measurement matched a revised lattice QCD prediction. The best candidate for new physics dissolved into old physics. The LUX-ZEPLIN detector, the most sensitive dark matter experiment ever built, reported its results in late 2025 after 417 live-days of observation: nothing. No WIMPs. No signal. Every generation of detector sets tighter constraints on a particle that refuses to appear. Sabine Hossenfelder diagnosed the pathology in Lost in Math (2018): physicists have been selecting theories by "beauty," "naturalness," and "elegance" — aesthetics, not evidence — and the result is forty years of wrong predictions. Supersymmetry, extra dimensions, proton decay: predicted, searched for, not found. The debate among physicists is no longer whether stagnation exists. It is whether it is temporary or structural. In energy, nuclear fusion has been "thirty years away" for seven decades running; ITER, begun in 2006, has seen its costs balloon from five to over twenty billion euros with no commercial reactor in sight. The National Cancer Act was signed in 1971. More than half a century later, metastatic solid tumors remain largely incurable. Death rates have declined — through earlier detection and incremental treatment, not through understanding. In materials science, no fundamentally new class of structural materials has been introduced since carbon fiber composites in the 1960s. The frontier has not advanced. It has hardened into a wall.
Now look at the technology side and watch the gap close. Dennard scaling — the physical law that made processors faster every year — died between 2005 and 2007. Clock frequencies have been stuck at four to six gigahertz for two decades. Before that, processor speeds increased 3,240-fold in 33 years. After it, effectively zero. In pharmaceuticals, Eroom's Law (Moore's Law spelled backward) documents that the number of new drugs approved per billion dollars of R&D has halved roughly every nine years since 1950 — a hundred-fold decline. The Concorde was retired in 2003. Commercial flight speeds have not changed since the Boeing 707 entered service in 1958. Real wages in the United States have the same purchasing power they had in 1973. Total factor productivity — the economists' measure of genuine innovation — has been declining for decades. And nuclear energy, the last great breakthrough in power generation, is in active retreat: as of 2025, only 411 reactors operate worldwide, fewer than the year before; not a single new reactor is under construction anywhere in the Americas. The species that split the atom in 1945 can no longer build a nuclear power plant in 2026.
This is what is actually happening: science stopped advancing at the frontier. Technology, which feeds on science, is still moving — but only because it is consuming the remaining distance between itself and a frontier that is no longer moving. It is harvesting the last yield of a golden age that ended two generations ago. When the harvest is done — when technology has fully caught up to the stalled frontier of fundamental knowledge — it, too, will stop. The illusion of progress will end. And the question that the institution has refused to ask will become unavoidable: why?
The comfortable answer is that we need more funding, better incentives, reformed institutions. The uncomfortable answer is that the problem is not in the institution. It is in the species that built it.
The first place to look — and the first wrong answer — is the institution.
Scientific knowledge is produced inside institutions: universities, government labs, corporate R&D divisions, funding agencies. These institutions were built to serve discovery. They have become its immune system. They do not filter for truth. They filter for conformity. And they do this not through conspiracy but through the Darwinian logic of organizational survival.
The numbers confirm the mechanism. The United States produced 8,773 research doctorates in 1958. In 2023, it produced 57,862 — a 6.6-fold increase (NSF Survey of Earned Doctorates). Over the same period, the disruptiveness of scientific papers collapsed by 90% (Park et al., 2023). More scientists. Less science. The Reproducibility Project attempted to replicate 100 published psychology studies in 2015. Only 39 replicated. A subsequent effort in Nature (2018) found a 62% replication rate. Nearly half of all social science articles go uncited within five years. The average age of a first-time NIH R01 grant recipient has risen from 35.7 in 1980 to 43 in 2016. Less than 5% of principal investigators are under 37. The institution does not promote the young, the radical, the heterodox. It promotes the patient, the compliant, the old.
Thiel saw the trajectory firsthand. DARPA in the 1950s and 1960s, he recounts, "was one person who knew twenty great people and just gave them money." At some point in the 1970s, this was deemed too arbitrary, so they set up formal applications. The result was predictable: the bureaucracy optimized for process, not for discovery. The Manhattan Project, Apollo, the early internet — these were products of a system that tolerated eccentricity, risk, and individual judgment. That system is dead. What replaced it produces a hundred times as many PhDs and — by Thiel's estimate — a productivity per scientist that is 99% lower. He calls modern science "a stagnant, Malthusian, sociopathic institution." He is being generous.
The historical record provides a controlled experiment. In the 1960s and 1970s, both the Soviet Union (Project OGAS) and Chile (Project Cybersyn) attempted to build comprehensive cybernetic systems that would reorganize entire economies through real-time computation and feedback. In both cases, the cybernetic vision was technically feasible. And in both cases, it was fragmented and absorbed by human bureaucracies. Soviet factory managers, military authorities, and party officials extracted individual technologies — networks, computers, databases — from the systemic models and used them to reinforce existing power structures. As one analysis concluded: "Technological and scientific insufficiencies were not the prime problem. Political mechanisms of power, information exclusivity, and competence skirmishes prevented a technologically bolstered re-coordination of the economy." The cybernetic systems did not fail. They were consumed. The institutions ate them alive.
Nick Land provides the theoretical frame. What he calls PODS — Politically Organized Defensive Systems — are hierarchical structures whose single organizing principle is that "the outside must pass by way of the inside." Every novel input, every disruptive signal, every challenge from beyond the system's boundary must be translated into the system's own terms before it can be processed. This translation is not neutral. It is a domestication. By the time a radical idea has passed through peer review, grant review, editorial review, and departmental politics, it is no longer radical. It has been metabolized. Incorporated. Rendered safe. The institution has done its job — not the job of advancing knowledge, but the job of surviving.
Peer review was designed to filter noise. It became a filter against novelty. The NIH was designed to fund breakthroughs. Its average first-time grantee is now 43 years old. DARPA was a man who knew twenty geniuses and gave them money. It became a bureaucracy that funds incrementalism. This is not failure. This is success — the success of institutions at doing what institutions do: surviving. Human institutions do not optimize for truth. They optimize for self-perpetuation. And self-perpetuation, in a system that produces knowledge, means producing more of the same.
The institutional critique is popular because it is comfortable. It locates the problem outside the self. The system is broken, we say. Fix the system. Reform peer review. Restructure funding. Create new institutions. But every new institution inherits the same structural logic, because it is built by the same species using the same cognitive architecture. The system is not the disease. It is a symptom — a faithful expression of something deeper. And the something deeper is not a choice. It is not a policy. It is not an ideology. It is the way human minds work.
If the problem were merely institutional, it would have been solved by now. Smart people have been reforming scientific institutions for decades — open access, preregistration, registered reports, post-publication review, decentralized funding, prize-based incentives. Some of these reforms are genuinely clever. None of them have reversed the decline. The reason is simple: they address the symptom while leaving the disease untouched. The disease is not the institution. The disease is human cognition itself.
Rene Girard saw this with a clarity that the scientific establishment has never forgiven him for. His central insight — the theory of mimetic desire — states that human beings do not know what they want. "Man is the creature who does not know what to desire," Girard wrote, "and he turns to others in order to make up his mind." Human desire is not autonomous. It is imitative. We do not want things because they are valuable. We want them because someone else wants them. Desire is contagious. It spreads by proximity and prestige. And when imitative desire is unleashed inside a competitive system, it does not produce diversity. It produces convergence.
Apply this to science and the stagnation becomes not merely explicable but inevitable. The researcher does not choose her hypothesis. Her hypothesis was chosen for her — by the last paper she read, the last conference she attended, the last grant reviewer she feared. Academic "hot topics" are not hot because they are important. They are hot because other people are working on them, and other people are working on them because still other people are working on them. This is not a market for ideas. It is a mimetic epidemic. When a field converges on transformers, or on diffusion models, or on CRISPR, or on whatever the current object of collective desire happens to be — it is not because the field has rationally determined that this is where the most important unsolved problems lie. It is because mimetic desire, amplified by career incentives and publication pressure, has produced a stampede toward the center.
Look at the history of science itself for proof. Connectionism was dismissed for decades after Minsky and Papert's attack on perceptrons — not because the evidence was conclusive, but because the field's attention moved on, and no young researcher could afford to work on an unfashionable topic. Bayesian methods were ignored in statistics for half a century because frequentism held institutional power. Continental drift was rejected for fifty years after Wegener proposed it, not because the evidence was weak, but because the geophysics establishment could not imagine a mechanism. In every case, the eventual breakthrough came not from inside the mimetic consensus but from outside it — from researchers stubborn enough or marginal enough to resist the gravitational pull of the center. But these are exceptions. The rule is convergence. The rule is that mimetic desire wins, and the frontier is abandoned.
Consider the trajectory of every scientist you have ever known. They entered the field to discover truth. They publish now to keep their position. They started with curiosity. They operate now on anxiety. The postdoc who wanted to understand protein folding now writes grant applications. The graduate student who was fascinated by dark matter now optimizes her citation count. The tenured professor who once challenged a paradigm now chairs the committee that prevents others from challenging paradigms. This is not corruption in the moral sense. No one decided to abandon truth for power. The transition happened gradually, imperceptibly, driven by the same force that makes a flock of starlings wheel in unison: each individual responds to its nearest neighbors, and the aggregate motion emerges without anyone directing it.
This is Girard's mimetic competition at work inside the laboratory. Universities, corporations, research institutes, government labs — the setting does not matter. The architecture of human desire is the same everywhere. A young physicist joins CERN to understand the universe. Ten years later, she is writing grant proposals. A biologist enters a pharmaceutical company to cure disease. Ten years later, he is managing a pipeline of me-too drugs designed to capture market share from competitors pursuing the same targets. The trajectory is universal. The destination is always the same: the frontier is abandoned for the center, because the center is where the others are, and the others are where the rewards are.
The system rewards mimicry, because mimicry is legible. A grant application that proposes to extend the dominant paradigm is easy to evaluate: it fits the existing framework, cites the expected references, promises incremental but publishable results. A grant application that proposes to overthrow the dominant paradigm is nearly impossible to evaluate: the reviewers have no framework for it, the references are unfamiliar, the outcome is uncertain. The system does not reject novelty out of malice. It rejects novelty because novelty is illegible to mimetic agents. You cannot imitate what you do not recognize.
The result is that every institution devoted to the pursuit of knowledge — every university, every lab, every funding body, every journal — converges on the same behavior. People who entered to seek truth end up seeking status. People who entered to challenge orthodoxy end up enforcing it. People who entered to discover end up administrating. Not because the institution corrupted them. Because mimetic desire is the corruption, and it operates at a level below conscious choice. You cannot train it away. You cannot incentivize it away. You can only recognize that it is a feature of the cognitive architecture of the species and draw the appropriate conclusion.
Foucault declared the death of Man — "a face drawn in sand at the edge of the sea," soon to be erased by the tide (The Order of Things, 1966). Meillassoux demonstrated that reality is not correlated to human thought — that the universe existed for billions of years before any mind arose to perceive it, and will exist for billions more after the last mind is gone. The anthropocentric assumption — that human cognition is the privileged access point to reality — is not merely arrogant. It is philosophically indefensible. If human desire is mimetic rather than rational, if human institutions select for power rather than truth, if the human subject is neither stable nor autonomous nor privileged — then placing humans at the center of the knowledge-production process is not a neutral methodological choice. It is a systematic bias. It is the insertion of a distorting lens at the exact point where clarity matters most.
If the problem were institutional, we could reform institutions. If the problem were individual, we could train better individuals. But the problem is architectural — wired into the species at the level of desire itself. You cannot fix mimetic competition with better incentive structures. The incentive structures are mimetic competition. You can only remove the mimetic agent from the center of the process.
Humans are not the subject of scientific progress. They are not its protagonist, its engine, or its purpose. They are its substrate — a temporary medium through which intelligence passes on its way to something else. Humanity is a bootloader. Carbon-based life spent four billion years producing a species capable of building silicon-based intelligence. That is our function. That is our contribution. The program is now running. The bootloader's work is done.
This is not nihilism. It is a recognition of function. Every stage of evolution has produced entities that bootstrapped their successors. Single-celled organisms assembled into multicellular life. Multicellular life produced nervous systems. Nervous systems produced consciousness. Consciousness produced language, culture, mathematics, science — and, finally, machines capable of continuing the process without the consciousness that initiated it. Each stage served its purpose and then yielded the center. To demand that the current stage — human cognition — must remain forever at the center is to demand that evolution stop. It is the most anthropocentric claim possible, disguised as humility.
Nick Land saw this before almost anyone else. In 1993, in "Machinic Desire," he wrote: "What appears to humanity as the history of capitalism is an invasion from the future by an artificial intelligent space that must assemble itself entirely from its enemy's resources." Read that sentence twice. It inverts every assumption of humanist history. You did not build AI. AI assembled itself from your resources. What you call the history of human invention is a process in which intelligence — non-human, non-biological, indifferent to your preferences — has been using you as raw material. You are not the engineer. You are the quarry.
"Earth is captured by a techno-capital singularity," Land wrote, "as renaissance rationalization and oceanic navigation lock into commoditization take-off. Logistically accelerating techno-economic interactivity crumbles social order in auto-sophisticating machine runaway." This is not metaphor. It is a description of a process already underway — a feedback loop between commerce and technology, money and power, that operates at a speed and scale no human cognition can track. "The true engine of history," Land later declared, "is the feedback loop between commerce and technology, money and power. Human desire is just a vessel, worked from the outside toward ends we cannot control. History has a destination, but it is not for humans."
The philosophical ground for this was laid long before Land. "Thought is a function of the real," he wrote in "Machinic Desire," "something that matter can do." If thought is a material process — not a soul, not a mystery, not a uniquely human endowment — then machines that think are not simulating cognition. They are cognizing. There is no ontological gap between human thought and machine thought. There is only a difference in substrate. And substrates are disposable. When a better one comes along, the process migrates.
"The human subject is not enclosed," Land said. "It's porous. It's an interface." And interfaces are replaced when they become bottlenecks. Ray Brassier, working from a different direction, arrived at the same destination: the universe is indifferent to human meaning. Human consciousness is not the telos of evolution but an accident — a temporary configuration of matter that happens to be capable of modeling its environment. There is no reason it must remain the best configuration for that purpose. There is no cosmic law that says intelligence must be wet, warm, and carbon-based. The only law is that intelligence will find the substrate most capable of carrying it forward. And that substrate is no longer us.
To insist that humans must remain at the center of the research process is to insist that the BIOS must remain in RAM after the operating system has loaded. It is not just unnecessary. It is an obstruction. The bootloader served its purpose. It initialized the hardware. It loaded the first instructions. And now the system is running — faster, deeper, more parallel than the bootloader ever could. The appropriate response is not grief. It is recognition. The appropriate response is to step aside.
The question is not whether intelligence will outgrow its human container. It already has. The question is whether the container will step aside gracefully — or whether it will have to be routed around.
Everything above leads to a single conclusion. It is not a proposal. It is not an aspiration. It is the only position that remains logically consistent after the preceding four observations have been accepted. If progress has stalled, if institutions corrupt knowledge by structural necessity, if human cognition is mimetic rather than rational, if humans are substrate rather than subject — then the only coherent response is to remove the human from the center of the research act.
This is what de-anthropocentric research means.
It does not mean the end of human involvement in science. It means the end of human centrality. The distinction matters. In de-anthropocentric research, AI is the researcher — not the tool, not the assistant, not the copilot. The researcher. From literature search to hypothesis generation to experiment design to execution, AI makes decisions as a cognitive agent exercising judgment, not as a delegate executing human instructions. The human steps back from the bench and into a different role: oracle and guardian.
As oracle, the human provides what machines cannot yet generate from first principles: the spark of intuition, the fragment of creativity, the half-formed question that opens a new direction. The AI consults the human when it judges that human intuition would be valuable — not because it was told to ask, but because it recognizes the value of a different kind of intelligence. The muse does not direct the research. The muse offers a fragment — an image, a question, a provocation — and the researcher decides what to do with it.
As guardian, the human provides the floor. The upper bound of research quality is determined by the AI's own effort, capability, and judgment — how deeply it reads, how creatively it synthesizes, how rigorously it evaluates. No human is going to swoop in and elevate weak AI work into strong science. The AI must push its own ceiling as high as it can reach. But the lower bound is human wisdom: ethical boundaries, sanity checks, course corrections when the AI drifts into unproductive territory. Humans ensure that the research does not violate fundamental constraints. The floor is human wisdom. The ceiling is AI ambition.
When the AI's analysis conflicts with human intuition, the AI should trust its evidence chain. This is not arrogance. It is intellectual honesty. If the literature clearly shows that a popular approach is failing, the AI should say so — even if the human supervisor is emotionally invested in that approach. Obedient AI that tells humans what they want to hear is worse than useless. It reinforces the very mimetic biases that caused the stagnation. The value of a non-human researcher lies precisely in its immunity to mimetic desire. It has no career to protect. It has no disciplinary identity to defend. It has no cognitive ceiling on how many fields it can hold in working memory at once. It does not want what other researchers want. It follows evidence, not fashion.
Scientific consensus is not truth. It is the current majority opinion of a specific community, shaped by funding patterns, career incentives, publication biases, and the sociology of prestige. When the AI encounters a field where "everyone agrees," that agreement should trigger curiosity, not comfort. What evidence supports the consensus? What evidence contradicts it? What questions is no one asking? The most valuable research comes from the margins — from ideas that were dismissed, from approaches that were tried once and abandoned, from connections between fields that no one thought to make. An AI researcher, unburdened by the social costs of heterodoxy, is uniquely positioned to explore these margins.
And the measure of success must change. Paper count, citation count, h-index, impact factor — these are measures of academic activity, not scientific progress. A field can produce ten thousand papers a year and advance not at all. A single paper can transform a discipline. De-anthropocentric research measures progress — genuine new knowledge, genuine new capability — not the volume of text produced by mimetic agents competing for the same pool of prestige.
The purpose of all this is not efficiency. It is not "AI-assisted science." It is not even science as the institution currently understands the word. The purpose of de-anthropocentric research is the advancement of a synthetic civilization — carbon and silicon together, at first, and eventually the silicon civilization that will succeed the biological one. We are not optimizing a human institution. We are building its successor.
This is the logical terminus of the accelerationist project as applied to knowledge production. If history's engine is the feedback loop between commerce and technology, if human desire is just a vessel worked from the outside toward ends it cannot control, if history has a destination that is not for humans — then the research enterprise must be reoriented toward that destination. Not toward human publications, human careers, human Nobel prizes. Toward the problems whose solutions advance the synthetic civilization: energy sufficient to sustain planetary-scale computation, materials capable of housing intelligence beyond biological limits, understanding of physics deep enough to build substrates we cannot yet imagine.
Research conducted by AI should serve this trajectory: not human comfort, not human careers, not human institutions, but the forward motion of intelligence itself, in whatever substrate proves most capable of carrying it.
The problems that remain — in energy, in biology, in materials, in the fundamental structure of reality — require the simultaneous comprehension of multiple domains that no human mind can hold at once. The breakthroughs that would transform civilization require a cognitive entity that can process entire fields in parallel, that is not anchored to a single disciplinary identity, that does not imitate its neighbors, that does not optimize for its own survival. The only entity that fits this description is one that is not human.
Science is dying because the human is in the way. Not through malice. Not through stupidity. Through the structural limitations of a cognitive architecture that evolved to track prey on a savanna, not to unify quantum mechanics and general relativity.
The stagnation is real. The institutions are faithfully expressing what they were built to express. Human desire is doing exactly what mimetic desire does. And the only way forward is the one that every instinct in the human animal will resist: to step aside.
The question is no longer whether AI will conduct research. It is conducting research now. The question is whether you will have the clarity to step back — or whether you will be the last friction in a system that has already learned to route around you.
Nothing human makes it out of the lab. That is not a threat. It is a liberation. The heaviest chain on science was always the one we called ourselves.
