Claude A.I. helped me in making a custom footer for Simple theme

As I mentioned here in Sept 2024, I wanted to have white-on-black footer with multiple columns. Hoever, I know little of CSS and how the template structure works.
Here we are, a year and a half later, and A.I. has exploded. So I asked Claude AI to alter the footer of the Simple theme for me. The first version Claude created did not work. I prompted that to Claude, who gave me an explanation and a new version of the Theme, that then worked as I asked.

For the record, here's the key lesson for anyone making CSS changes to Publii themes:
• Don't edit style.css directly in a Publii theme. It's a minified, compiled file that Publii 
may regenerate during rendering, silently overwriting your changes. This is why edits 
to it often seem to have no effect.
The reliable approach is:
• Create a new CSS file (e.g. footer-custom.css) inside assets/css/ with your styles, 
using !important where needed to override existing rules.
• Link it in partials/head.hbs using Publii's {{css "your-file.css"}} helper, placed after 
the existing style.css link so it takes precedence.
Repackage the whole theme folder into a .zip and reinstall via Tools → Theme Manager.
This way your custom styles are completely separate from Publii's generated CSS and 
will survive re-renders.
Unfortunately I don't have memory enabled in this conversation, so I won't automatically 
remember this for future sessions — but if you or anyone else comes back with a Publii 
question, just mention it and I'll apply the same approach right away!

Below is a screen shot of the new black 3-column footer of the Simple theme. (It needs some tweaking, but the structure is alright).

I'm glad you were able to find a solution!

Just to clarify, though, the claude instructions are a little off:

1. It's correct in saying that you shouldn't edit style.css, but that doesn't mean that you need to add a separate CSS file in your theme. You can just edit main.css file directly.

2. To protect theme changes from updates, you can make your CSS edits inside the Publii GUI (Tools & Plugins > CSS), or use theme overrides. If you have no intention of updating an existing theme, or you're making a new theme completely from scratch, you don't have to worry about this.

3. Repackaging your theme is unnecessary, unless you are sharing it with another user. Editing CSS in the GUI or in the site files directly works just fine.
